Week 1 of Homeschooling: Family Meeting

This week marked the beginning of our homeschool journey for the new year, and it was a week filled with purpose, connection, and excitement.

We started our mornings with a family devotion time, grounding ourselves in God's Word and setting the tone for the day. This quiet time together reminded us of the centrality of Christ in all that we do and prepared our hearts for the day ahead.

Following our devotion on Monday, we held a family meeting. This wasn’t just any meeting; it was a special time where we bonded and talked about the business of our home and school. It was a joy to see everyone engaged and contributing their thoughts and ideas.

After our meeting, I gave the kids their tasks for the week and encouraged them to create their schedules. I believe in fostering independence and responsibility, and allowing them to plan their day is a crucial part of this.

My oldest daughter starts High School this year and will be working on career prep.

I will be challenging my oldest son to improve his writing skills and persevere in the face of opposition or new math concepts.

Most days they find interest-led projects to work on after completing their core subjects.

This week is was a pink electric toy car that only goes backwards. They opened it up and had trouble getting it to charge but are still tinkering with it.

The little ones are hopeful that that they will be able to ride in it once the rain stops.

It’s been a rainy week with hurricane Debbie passing through. We haven’t been outside much but it’s been nice for puddle splashing.

My youngest daughter has been a great teacher for the baby while practicing her reading and math skills.

It’s important to me that my children understand their God-given purpose and how to use their gifts and lives to lead others to Christ, starting right here in our home.

While academics have their place, what truly matters is their spiritual growth and understanding of their roles as followers of Christ.

Our cute principal, also known as Dad, was off from work this week. His presence brought an extra dose of joy and support to our day. I can already tell I’ll be spending A LOT of time in his “office” for advice and encouragement as we navigate this homeschool journey together.

Week 1 was a success, filled with learning & laughter, compassion & conflict, preseverance & problem solving. I’m looking forward to seeing how God will work in and through us in the days to come.
